Emil won the part in TRW when he was just 8 years old, beating out a slew of other child star wannabes. The movie was shot in New South Wales near where he was born and though Emil had a lot of screen time in the film he never uttered a word of dialogue (I guess dem feral kids don't get a lot a book learnin'). His character went on to achieve something resembling cult status but Emil, as an actor, just sort of faded from view.
So what's he up to these days? Digging burrows all over the outback to hide his stash of Dinky Dee dog food in preparation for the pocaclypse? Doing battle with other angry commuters waiting in line for $4 a gallon gasoline? Practicing for the World Boomerang Championships? Sorry to disappoint you but its nothing so glamorously disturbing. Today 38 year old Emil is manager of a Sydney jewelry store and, rumor has it, has even learned to speak!
Emil Minty as The Feral Kid 1981 and in a recent photo |
i was hoping mad max would adopt him as his new sidekick. cute kid
ReplyDeleteSurely he deserves a cameo in Mad Max 4
ReplyDeleteIs there a mad max 4 ? Or is there going to be , cool if it were true .
DeleteAt the end of Mad Max 2, the closing narration reveals that the Feral Kid grows to manhood and becomes the leader of the Great North Tribe (The deep rich voice of the narrator is actually the Feral Kid as an adult, reflecting on the past!). So, if there's to be some epic battle between the two great tribes in Mad Max 4, it would be nice to give Emil Minty a much-deserved cameo. Just DON'T give any roles to ANYONE from the incredibly bad Mad Max 3.
ReplyDeleteMad Max 2 was filmed around Broken Hill in far west NSW. Emil was born in Sydney
ReplyDelete"Mad Max: Fury Road" with Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron is currently filming and due in theaters in 2013, though an exact release date hasn't been announced yet to my knowledge.
ReplyDeleteLoved him as the Feral kid would be nice to see the little bugger back!
ReplyDeleteEmil also had a prominent role in the 8-part TV drama about James Cook, Joseph Banks etc. and the discovery of Australia. He played "Young Nick" the youngest crew member on HMS Endeavor. He was a very VERBAL(!) London street-kid that volunteered to sail along. Unfortunate he died in part 4 on the way back to Great Britain. Emil Minty did a great job in this role, maybe the best he done.
ReplyDeleteMad Max Fury Road with Tom Hardy
ReplyDeleteThe narrator also said that was the last he every saw of max...so a cameo would be
ReplyDeleteHe was a child genius...so he is probably still cool.
ReplyDeleteHey Anonymous Thanks for your comment on my character in captain cook It was one of my later roles that I enjoyed and worked hard to get into the character.
ReplyDeleteEmil, you rock! You are another reason we Yanks love our Yang counterpart south of the equator so much.
ReplyDeleteSorry Emil didn't get a cameo in Fury Road (which was nonetheless the best movie I've seen in years) although at one point I see one of the 'wives' playing with what seems like the tiny music box Max gave him in Road Warrior. At tip of the hat to EM?
